Devonshire, by Lynne Connolly, is a lovely story combining a
romance and a grand adventure. We reunite with Miss Rose Golightly and
her fiancé, Lord Richard Strang, who are quickly embroiled in local
politics. Rose's childhood friend, Tom Skerrit, is attempting to
fight
smugglers using his town, Devonshire, as a base for their black
operations. After several outrages perpetrated against his people, Tom
takes action, and causes himself and Rose to be placed in a dangerous
situation. Will Lord Strang be able to rescue Rose? Will Tom be able
to win his battle? These questions are answered at the end of this
delightful novel.
I found this story to be even better than the first book. Rose
and Richard grow closer, and though I was sad at not being able to "see"
their wedding, the action and romance satisfied my every desire. The
author fleshed out each character delightfully, and I fully enjoyed
every page. The villains were horrible, the heroes wonderful, and the
politics of society were explored amusingly. The town seemed to be a
player in the novel as well, and that was a surprising gift. The story
overall was like meeting familiar old friends, and that is always a
welcome distraction. I highly recommend this book.
